What Is Glucomannan Powder And How Does It Influence Your Body?

Glucomannan powder is a naturally occurring nutritional fiber that comes from the konjac plant. For years, it has been used as a thickener and emulsifier with countless cooking applications.

Surprisingly, there are many claims of significant health benefits.

Some studies support its ability to help lower your blood pressure and fight obesity. However, its ability to help reduce cholesterol levels is still up for debate.

Luckily, there is no doubt that if you mix this powder with water and drink it before each meal, you are not going to be able to eat as much as you normally would.

The Way This Substance Works

With no starch or sugar content, this substance is basically a calorie-free carbohydrate in the form of fiber. If you have ever taken such supplement, you already know that it can drastically reduce your appetite.

The fibrous content is soluble, so it tends to attract water (this is where the “magic” lies). When it comes in the contact with water, it forms a gel, helping to slow down your digestion. Therefore, filling up your stomach with glucomannan powder before a meal will help you to eat much less and still feel full!

Therefore, filling up your belly with glucomannan powder before a meal will help you to eat much less and still feel full! Because it quickly gels up, you need to dissolve this powder in your glass of water and drink it as soon as possible.

Pay attention: This substance, like any fiber, doesn’t get broken down and absorbed into your bloodstream; it remains intact and only passes through your digestive system.

You Can Easily Add It to Your Meals

Another beneficial property is the fact that it is without any odor as well as without almost any taste so you can add it to just about any recipe that would normally include cornstarch.

If you do not like to use supplements to meet your daily need of dietary fiber, then there are many fiber-rich foods you can eat, such as bran, beans, seeds, nuts, and dried spices.

The key to using glucomannan powder in your cooking is to remember to add it to cold or tepid water only. If you add it to the hot water, it will thicken and turn into gel almost instantly.

Pay attention: By adding glucomannan powder to your daily meals you are taking in the fiber that you need without the chalky taste.

Great Benefits for Your Body

Except being a useful thickening agent for your meals, the extract from Konjac root has many applications and benefits for your body as well. You are now probably thinking:

“Why would I want a big glob of gel going through my system?”

Well, the answer is easy as it comes with many benefits:

  1. This substance induces satiation or the feeling of being full. This is especially important if you are trying to lose weight and minimize your sugar cravings.
  2. It helps to cleanse your body of toxins and to prevent constipation.
  3. Glucomannan helps your body to manage blood sugar levels and reduces the insulin spike your body often experience after a meal rich in carbohydrates.
  4. This substance reduces the absorption of cholesterol from your diet and inflammatory patterns in your body.

Pay attention: Modern science has not entirely proved the weight loss aspects of this substance, but if you think about its basic physical and chemical properties, the potential advantages are quite clear. Just check out the section below dealing with various scientific studies on this substance.

  1. I just purchased the Glucomanan capsules, if I cant swallow them can they be opened an sprinkled onto food like the powder?

  2. I’ve been taking the Nature’s Way Glucomannan Konjac Root capsules for two days now. You take one 30 mins before each meal (so 3 a day) with a full glass of water. I am an overeater. I can sit down and devour a whole pizza by myself no problem. I’ve been looking to lose weight but I have such a hard time because I get so nauseous and light headed when I don’t eat enough. Because of these pills I eat literally 4 times less than I normally would. Although it’s only been two days, I can tell this is going to work. I would totally recommend them to anyone. An amazing product! I also love how its completely natural. No chemicals or dangerous ingredients to worry about. I’m in love!!

  3. I’ve been trying to drink this with water, but its just unbearable. Maybe I will try it with food. The first day, it cleared out my digestive system & I hardly thought about food! It works, but so terrible to get down /:

  5. What can I say about Glucomannan powder? Well the first thing is that everything said in this article is in fact true. It helps a lot in weight loss and I’ve lost a fair share of weight because of it. I sprinkle just a bit of it on some of my meals, just so I can get full faster. This makes me lose weight and I love it. I suggest anyone to try Gulcomannan Powder, you will not be disappointed.

    • Hey Brent, please do let us know about your experience with this supplement. We will all appreciate your feedback. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. I’ve been taking Glucomannan powder with all of my food as a late and it’s quite wonderful I must say. I actually have sprinkled some of it on pizza to make sure I don’t overdo it. Please though, make sure to drink lots of water, as this will pact up the powder into a mush to which could block your intestines, drink water before eating to stop this from happening.

  7. Glucomannan powder, can’t say I’ve heard of it, but it does sound quite intriguing. Can you get this stuff at stores nearly anywhere? If so I think I’ll have to head to the store today to get me some. Do you think Wal-mart would have this stuff? If not I might have to look for some online.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Hey Carl, it should be available in every store I would say. Give it a try and do let us know. Thanks for stopping by.

  8. I have not heard a whole lot about Glucomannan-powder, but I am thinking it may be worth giving the stuff a shot. I know I could use a healthy supplement that I can add to my foods. I like that it’s odorless and tasteless for the most part. I wonder if I could add it to ice cream. haha! 😀

  9. I haven’t gotten a whole lot of fiber in my diet, and I am seriously considered this stuff now. I Know fiber is supposed to fill you up more, but is this stuff all fiber? Or is there other ingredients I should know about?

    • Danny, fiber is really vital in your diet. I would say eat as many fiber rich foods as possible. It will do your really good.

  10. I’m not familiar with Glucomannan Powder but I know how well fiber works to curb hunger. Fiber is one of the few things I’ve found that can truly make me feel full.

I may have to give this supplement a try. I really appreciate that it is both odorless and tasteless.

  11. It is neat how you can lower your cholesterol, blood pressure and lose weight with it. I have seen many news reports of dieting pills and powders being hazardous to a person’s health. For example, I read that in 2009, the FDA found 69 brands of diet pills that were already on the shelves of grocery and health stores, and pharmacies that had hidden ingredients that could cause seizures, liver damage, heart attacks, stroke, and high blood pressure. So, I personally believe you are better off taking this powder than gambling with your health by listening to TV commercials about all those dietary pills.

  12. I use a generic one found in most Vitamin stores. It works very well. At first I bought the capsules but found I had to take too many and I hate swallowing capsules. Instead when I make a shake, drink, etc it is barely noticeable until I realize I’m no longer hungry!

    • The choking usually refers to the capsules expanding your esophagus rather than your stomach. It’s suggested from my personal research that people who have swallowing problems should not use this product in capsule form.

  13. I have never heard of that powder, I must admit, as I read this article… I think this is what most people who are on diet would love to add on their food. It makes sense to me that the longer it takes you to want the next meal, the better results you’ll get. The only thing I want to ask you, is it safe to take this while breastfeeding? I have a one year old child, still in a process of stopping, so can I use it?

    • I am sorry Sthe, but I am not eligible to answer this question. I am not medical professional nor have I knowledge on this issue. Therefore, I can only recommend you to ask your doctor on what does he thinks about it.

  14. This is really interesting because my doctor actually prescribed me a fibre drink to help with an unrelated medical issue I was experiencing. The lemon flavoured powder was mixed with lemon and stirred well until it was dissolved. I had to drink it all right away because if not it would turn in to a thick gel substance. After drinking it I experienced a real decline in my appetite, I wasn’t eating as much as I normally would. Until now I had never made the connection but that must have been what it was.

I couldn’t tell you for sure if it contained glucomannan but it was certainly pleasantly tasty and helped my other medical problem.

  15. Wow, this sound very interesting. It’s amazing to me how there appear to be these things that occur naturally and are not chemically made that will do the things the chemicals will but in a healthy way. I guess it is just the media and big companies that keep these things from the masses. Your posts have inspired me to do more research into what I eat.

  16. I have not taken this pill, but am familiar with protein supplements that include fiber; and have used them to great results in the past to help satisfy my cravings. It would appear that using this supplement would have similar effects as taking a protein supplement, or perhaps even better effects as protein can break down into additional weight gain if you are not exercising enough.

So, like with protein supplements, I am sure that all of them are not made equal. Are there any brand name products that you recommend, or are we still in the “trial” phase where we are waiting for the best products to rear their faces?
