getting-rid-of-water-weightMany people tend to experience the joy of shedding countless pounds of water weight during the first few weeks of their diet.

As they step onto the scale, they are dazzled when they have lost a total of 10 pounds within just a few days.

Even though it fluctuates and does not equate to true fat loss, it can produce amazing and dramatic changes within just a short period of time.

Men and women who report reduction of this kind of excess H2O after a few days of their dietary efforts note a sleeker and much slimmer appearance.

Just get rid of it and make your abs more pronounced, slim your hips and waistline!

As noted, fat loss requires time and persistence.

But a safe drop in excessive bodily liquids can give you a nice reward for your efforts, and as well as immediate results that look great.

Lose that Weight Overnight

Your body is composed primarily of water and it is possible to lose it overnight. The liquids content of your body is constantly fluctuating in response to your lifestyle.

For example, if you consume a strict diet on a particular day, you may get rid of up to three pounds by the next day. The disadvantage of losing mostly only H2O is that you can gain it back fairly easily. However, with persistence and a healthy lifestyle, you can keep it off.

Reducing bloating and liquid retention overnight requires a few key factors including:

  • Engaging in Cardio
  • Lessening Your Salt Consumption
  • Eating Protein & Fiber
  • Limiting your Sugar Intake
  • Drinking more Water
  • Lowering your Cortisol Levels
  • Ingesting Natural Diuretics

Method 1: Go for Cardio Workouts

One of the most critical facets of your diet will entail engaging in cardiovascular exercise.

Cardio workouts bolster your heart rate which contributes to fat burning. Because these workouts increase your metabolic rate, they also happen to burn any residual toxins in your body that might retain excess liquids.

Exercise for 30-60 minutes, as exceeding this limit will raise your cortisol levels and hinder weight loss altogether.

Method 2:  Reduce Sodium Intake

salt-in-a-wooden-bowlIt is well-known fact that salt is often responsible for water retention. People who consume a high sodium dishes often experience excess bloating and an increase in inches.

This is because water molecules are naturally attracted to sodium which is found in most foods.

Please Note! A certain amount of salt is necessary in your diet, as it helps retain your electrolyte balance and permits many of your organs to function properly.

However, try to stay within the recommended daily intake, as exceeding this will merely lead again to retention of liquids.

Method 3: Eat Protein, Fiber Rich Foods & Limit Sugar Intake (Even Sweet Sodas)

Sugar is the bane of all diets! Foods that are high in this substance have a tendency to increase storage of fat and adipose tissue.

Furthermore, it contains too many calories that may even lead to excess cellulite. Instead of feasting on sugar, it is recommended that you embark upon a protein and fiber rich food plan.

  • Protein – It contributes to muscle building which can raise your metabolic rate and aid in fat burning.
  • Fiber – Stuff rich on this substance boost the efficiency of your digestive tract which is also an important contributor to weight loss.

Method 4: Drink More H2O

Most people will read the next tip mockingly as a result of its counter-intuitive nature. In order to shed excess water weight, you must consume the recommended daily amount of liquids.

If you exercise during the day, consider incorporating even more of it into your food plan to prevent a dehydration. This method works because your body exerts every effort possible to keep you hydrated.

And when you drink too little, it will hang on to every molecule of H2O that it possibly can in order to keep your vital functions working. However, when you consume sufficient amounts during the day, your organism begins to shed its excess stores.

Method 5: Eat & Drink Natural Diuretics Daily

There are many natural foods that can easily expedite the loss of water weight during your diet. Fruits and vegetables are a great source of diuretics and antioxidants which eliminate free radicals.

Various herbs contribute to reduction of bloating as well, including:

  • Parsley
  • Ginger
  • Fennel
  • Garlic

The best way to promote weight loss is to reduce your stress levels. Consider the following activities:

  • Do meditation
  • Watch comedy
  • Enjoy a nice book
  • Do exercise
  • Go to the beach
  • Go on a walk
  • Spend time with someone special
  • Try a new hobby

Hmm… I’d kind of disregarded water weight as anything to think about, since like you said, it’s so easy to gain it back. Still, losing 10 pounds by tomorrow sounds very appealing!

  • Lois

It’s probably nothing to worry about, but is it safe to lose so much water weight so quickly? I’m worried about dehydration and other stuff like that. The methods you describe seem pretty healthy though.

    • fighter

No, you only have to worry about dehydrating yourself if you aren’t replenishing your body with liquids afterwards. Fighters, and wrestlers are losing 20+lbs in only a day or less using techniques like this, that would be unhealthy and dehydrating. Promoting a good sweat while working out is far from unhealthy

  • Meghan

Cortisol levels really do a lot of damage to the body! I knew that they contributed to weight gain, but didn’t realize that a lot of that was just water. They also make the body store more of it’s calories as fat. When your body sees stress, it’s natural instinct is to store as much energy and water to be able to get through a hard time. Unfortunately, the extra weight can give lots of us even more stress!

Are dandelion greens also a diuretic, or is it just the root? I use them as salad and sometimes cooking greens when they’re in season. I’ve heard of people brewing the flowers as well as some sort of health remedy, but I can’t remember what it was supposed to do.

    • Cindy

To my knowledge they detox the liver and work as a diuretic, I am not certain on this though. Hopefully this helped!

  • Warren

Exercise really helps me with my stress level. It was a little counter-intuitive at first, but at the end of my workout, I feel totally relaxed. Exhausted, but relaxed.

  • Betty

thanks a lot for the article! green tea always helps me reduce my water weight, when i drink a few cups in a few days i’m down 2 lbs :) it’s really a miraculous little drink!

  • Gabbi

Wow, very informative list! I always battle with water weight, but never knew what else to do besides not eating salty – well, now I know!!! I really need to drink more water!

  • Lidya

Water weight really is a pest…you can go from looking fine, to puffy and bloated, in less than a day! I personally use natural diuretics, and drink lots and lots of water when first trying to lose weight, to gain a bit of morale from seeing the scale drop, even though it’s not “real” weight

  • Lucy

Not eating salt and drinking more water is a sure-fire way to start any diet! The scale moves a little and you get very motivated to change even more things! Green tea is also great, keeps me from looking bloated.

  • Derek

I tend to retain water weight, and I stand by most of what you said – diuretics, lots of water, low stress levels…low carb also helps. For me it’s awful, I have such bad retention that I look puffy if I eat normally for a week or two.

    • long_time_trainer

Do you drink soda? It sounds like that might be the case.

  • Lu Anna

Green tea and ginger really helped me lose 2 lbs of water weight so easily!!! I just drank a few cups a day and seasoned some stuff with ginger. Sure, i went to the bathroom SO often, but it was worth it. I look less bloated now!!! Thanks!

  • Allie

Thank you SO much for this list, I really needed it! Im going to a wedding and want to lose 5 lbs, but didn’t know how to quickly drop the weight – now I know hahaha. To the store with me to get some tea and ingredients for Jillian’s blend!

    • Trevor

A hot epson salt bath could help as well!

  • Brenda

    Wonderful list!
Cortisol is awful, really, you have to take care of it else you end up look like a puffy mess. I can’t help it though, I’m very stressed. Hopefully the other methods will help me. Thank you.

  • Trish

This is a great way to just cleanse your body as well. It isn’t always about the weight loss, it is also about what you are getting out of your body!

  • SkinnyChick

Great List!!!!! I agree with what you said about sodium, it makes me so bloated and I notice even my wedding rings feel tighter. If i must use salt I use sea salt, believe it or not, but sea salt can also help you in weight loss. It helps the body to create digestive juices so that the foods you eat are digested faster, and it helps to prevent buildup in the digestive tract, which eventually can lead to constipation and weight gain. But its still salt so I only use it if I must.

  • Glory Burton

I am sitting here giggling because I started my diet 12 days ago, in that time I lost 10 lbs, I was very happy but I knew that it was just water weight lol. However I will take your advice and just keep going! Love this article Christine, please do some meal advices for busy people.

  • Jasmine

Oh my goodness, I just made a list of all the herbs that you have recommended! My wedding is coming up in 12 days and I am become desperate because I need to lose 5 more lbs. My grandmother used to make us ginger tea, and she used to say it “kept us skinny” lol all this time I thought she was telling an old wives’ tale. Great article, love your organization and style of writing.

  • Thomas

As a personal trainer, I always tell my clients that the first ten lbs are the easiest to lose and the last ten lbs can be harder to lose. Just as you stated, the first ten are usually water weight, but I find it gives my clients a boost of confidence. Its very essential to “eat clean” and avoid all processed food, just as you wrote. The other that I stress is to avoid sugar!! I think I will have my clients check this site out, it has great tips!

  • Chris

I was wondering if you had any tips for people addicted to sodas? I just cannot stand the taste of water, I know it might sound silly but I feel I am addicted to diet pepsi. I work out, try to avoid eating out, but I cannot give up my diet pepsi. I agree with this article, soda keeps you bloated. I will try the Jillian Michael´s Special Diuretic Drink. Thanks for the great tips!
