REMEMBER: This GUIDE Will Show You 6 Best Ways to Shed Water Weight! Method #3 is Especially EFFECTIVE! These Tips Helped Over 220,000 Readers of SkinnyWithFiber! Awesome Photos INCLUDED!

Both men and women often experience the joy of shedding countless pounds of water weight during first few weeks of their diet. As they step onto the scale, they are dazzled by losing a total of 10 pounds within just a few days.

Even though these numbers often fluctuate and do not equate to the pure fat loss, getting rid of excess liquids can produce surprising changes. You will note a sleeker and much slimmer figure. Although real fat loss requires time and persistence, a safe drop in excessive water weight can give you an excellent quick reward for your efforts.

Just get rid of those extra pounds with following tips and make your abs more toned, and your hips and waistline slimmer!

Way #1 – Go for 30 Minutes of Cardio

The first way to get rid of excessive water weight is to start sweating. My most critical advice is to engage in cardiovascular exercise as this will boost your heart rate and metabolism.

Thanks to increased metabolic rate your body will burn not only fat but any residual toxins in your body that contribute to retaining excess liquids.

My advice: Exercise for 30 to 60 minutes, as exceeding this limit will raise your cortisol levels! If you do not know, higher cortisol levels will hinder your weight loss altogether.

Way #2 – Reduce Your Sodium Intake

less salt for dash diet

It is a well-known fact that sodium – a substance that is present in regular table salt – is often responsible for water retention. If you consume dishes that are highly seasoned by regular salt, you should experience excess bloating and an increase in your waist size!

This is because sodium, that is present in most junk and fast foods, naturally attracts water molecules.

However, a certain amount of salt in your diet is necessary, as it helps retain your electrolyte balance and allows many of your organs to function properly.

My advice: You should always try to stay within the recommended daily intake of sodium (not salt) – less than 2,300 mg a day! You should also swap the regular white salt for its pink Himalayan version as it includes less sodium and much more trace minerals.

Way #3 – Fix Your Daily Menu

There is no doubt that sugar (especially artificial one) is the bane of all diets. Foods that are very sweet have a tendency to increase fat storage. Furthermore, it contains too many calories that may even lead to cellulite!

Therefore, I recommend you to make these crucial changes to your dietary habits:

  • Cut out sweet sodas and all artificial sweeteners.
  • Men should limit daily sugar intake to 150 calories (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons) and women to 100 calories (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).
  • Increase the amount of fiber rich foods in your daily menu to boost the efficiency of your digestive tract that plays a crucial role in any weight loss process.
  • Raise your daily protein intake. Just multiply your actual weight (in pounds) by 0.36 and then double that number. This is the amount of protein (in grams) you should eat daily.

Keep in mind: Instead of feasting on sugar, you should rather embark upon a protein and fiber rich food plan. These nutrients contribute to muscle building which can raise your metabolic rate and aid in fat burning.

Way #4 – Drink More Water

Most people will read the next tip mockingly as a result of its counter-intuitive nature. To shed excess water weight, you must consume the recommended daily amount of liquids.

According to the information shared on Mayoclinic, adequate intake is as follows:

  • Men should consume around 13 cups (3 liters) of beverages each day.
  • Women should consume around 9 cups (2.2 liters) of beverages each day.

If you exercise during the day, consider drinking even more as part of your daily food plan to prevent dehydration. This method works because your body exerts every effort possible to keep you hydrated.

Keep in mind: When you drink too little, your body will hang on to every molecule of water that it possibly can in order to keep your vital functions working. However, when your daily intake is sufficient, your organism begins to discharge its excess reserves.

Way #5 – Eat & Drink Natural Diuretics on Daily Basis!

Did you know that you can easily incorporate into your diet many foods that will improve the loss of excessive water? These are called diuretics and are widely available all over the world!

You can choose from a wide selection of:

  • Fruits such as melons, black currants or cranberries.
  • Vegetables such as fennel, garlic or parsley.
  • Herbs such as yarrow, stinging nettle, and cilantro.

Pay attention: Except foods mentioned above you should focus on these as well – oats, apple cider vinegar, green tea, carrot juice, lemon juice, etc.

Way #6 – Reduce Physical & Emotional Stress

People usually undermine the importance of critical psychological and emotional factors in their weight loss process. Did you know that your body weight is affected even by daily worries?

If this information is new to you then I bet you have never heard of a hormone called cortisol!

It is a stress-induced hormone that makes your body store much more fat – and water with it – within your body tissues. Both physical and emotional forms of stress such as excessive exercise or emotional turmoil can increase your cortisol levels.

Therefore, you can try to:

  • Meditate
  • Watch a Comedy Movie
  • Read a Lovely Book

The best way to promote weight loss is to reduce your stress levels. You can do this easily by doing various things you like.

My advice: You should exercise daily (but not too much – see way #1 on this list); go to the beach or for a walk; spend time with someone special or try a new hobby!

  1. thanks alot, it was so interesting, i have 12kilogram over weight 8 kilogram of water and two of minerals and two of protein, there is no body fat, so i am wondering if is that can be normal , and try by my self to lose it , or is a
serious case and i should go to doctor and ask about it? please i need your advise

  2. I want to add that sugar actually lowers your immune system for around 5 hours. I don’t currently have an article around, but I remember that I’d seen a few solid articles on that. So look it up from an .edu or website with expert sources.

  3. I was wondering if you had any tips for people addicted to sodas? I just cannot stand the taste of water, I know it might sound silly but I feel I am addicted to diet pepsi. I work out, try to avoid eating out, but I cannot give up my diet pepsi. I agree with this article, soda keeps you bloated. I will try the Jillian Michael´s Special Diuretic Drink. Thanks for the great tips!

    • If you can’t stand the taste of plain water, try herbal teas with lemon (hot or cold). Also, you simply have to just stop buying soda – if you don’t buy it, you won’t drink it. Every time you are tempted visualize yourself bloating up and decide it’s not worth the taste. Give yourself 3 weeks, that’s how long it takes to form a habit

Also, while this article is good you will probably benefit from more in depth information found in the book

  4. As a personal trainer, I always tell my clients that the first ten lbs are the easiest to lose and the last ten lbs can be harder to lose. Just as you stated, the first ten are usually water weight, but I find it gives my clients a boost of confidence. Its very essential to “eat clean” and avoid all processed food, just as you wrote. The other that I stress is to avoid sugar!! I think I will have my clients check this site out, it has great tips!

  5. Oh my goodness, I just made a list of all the herbs that you have recommended! My wedding is coming up in 12 days and I am become desperate because I need to lose 5 more lbs. My grandmother used to make us ginger tea, and she used to say it “kept us skinny” lol all this time I thought she was telling an old wives’ tale. Great article, love your organization and style of writing.

  6. I am sitting here giggling because I started my diet 12 days ago, in that time I lost 10 lbs, I was very happy but I knew that it was just water weight lol. However I will take your advice and just keep going! Love this article Christine, please do some meal advices for busy people.

  7. Great List!!!!! I agree with what you said about sodium, it makes me so bloated and I notice even my wedding rings feel tighter. If i must use salt I use sea salt, believe it or not, but sea salt can also help you in weight loss. It helps the body to create digestive juices so that the foods you eat are digested faster, and it helps to prevent buildup in the digestive tract, which eventually can lead to constipation and weight gain. But its still salt so I only use it if I must.

  8. This is a great way to just cleanse your body as well. It isn’t always about the weight loss, it is also about what you are getting out of your body!

  9. Wonderful list!
Cortisol is awful, really, you have to take care of it else you end up look like a puffy mess. I can’t help it though, I’m very stressed. Hopefully the other methods will help me. Thank you.

  10. Thank you SO much for this list, I really needed it! Im going to a wedding and want to lose 5 lbs, but didn’t know how to quickly drop the weight – now I know hahaha. To the store with me to get some tea and ingredients for Jillian’s blend!

  11. Green tea and ginger really helped me lose 2 lbs of water weight so easily!!! I just drank a few cups a day and seasoned some stuff with ginger. Sure, i went to the bathroom SO often, but it was worth it. I look less bloated now!!! Thanks!

  12. I tend to retain water weight, and I stand by most of what you said – diuretics, lots of water, low stress levels…low carb also helps. For me it’s awful, I have such bad retention that I look puffy if I eat normally for a week or two.

  13. Not eating salt and drinking more water is a sure-fire way to start any diet! The scale moves a little and you get very motivated to change even more things! Green tea is also great, keeps me from looking bloated.

  14. Water weight really is a pest…you can go from looking fine, to puffy and bloated, in less than a day! I personally use natural diuretics, and drink lots and lots of water when first trying to lose weight, to gain a bit of morale from seeing the scale drop, even though it’s not “real” weight

  15. Wow, very informative list! I always battle with water weight, but never knew what else to do besides not eating salty – well, now I know!!! I really need to drink more water!

  16. thanks a lot for the article! green tea always helps me reduce my water weight, when i drink a few cups in a few days i’m down 2 lbs 🙂 it’s really a miraculous little drink!

  17. Exercise really helps me with my stress level. It was a little counter-intuitive at first, but at the end of my workout, I feel totally relaxed. Exhausted, but relaxed.

  18. Are dandelion greens also a diuretic, or is it just the root? I use them as salad and sometimes cooking greens when they’re in season. I’ve heard of people brewing the flowers as well as some sort of health remedy, but I can’t remember what it was supposed to do.

    • To my knowledge they detox the liver and work as a diuretic, I am not certain on this though. Hopefully this helped!

  19. Cortisol levels really do a lot of damage to the body! I knew that they contributed to weight gain, but didn’t realize that a lot of that was just water. They also make the body store more of it’s calories as fat. When your body sees stress, it’s natural instinct is to store as much energy and water to be able to get through a hard time. Unfortunately, the extra weight can give lots of us even more stress!

  20. It’s probably nothing to worry about, but is it safe to lose so much water weight so quickly? I’m worried about dehydration and other stuff like that. The methods you describe seem pretty healthy though.

    • No, you only have to worry about dehydrating yourself if you aren’t replenishing your body with liquids afterwards. Fighters, and wrestlers are losing 20+lbs in only a day or less using techniques like this, that would be unhealthy and dehydrating. Promoting a good sweat while working out is far from unhealthy

  21. Hmm… I’d kind of disregarded water weight as anything to think about, since like you said, it’s so easy to gain it back. Still, losing 10 pounds by tomorrow sounds very appealing!
